The largest earthquake in the last 40 years of recorded history (8.9 on the Richter) has, within a day of its striking, taken over 11,000 lives according to some news reports. For the first times, tsunamis have struck India's coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. According to a NDTV news item this morning, US Geological Survey teams tried warning countries in SE Asia on the impending tsunamis & flash floods, but most of the countries in the SE Asian subcontinent are not equipped with tsunami warning centers. Anyway, it was perhaps too late. In India alone, the tsunami has now claimed over 4000 lives.
